History of the Deerhound; Dog Breed

The hunt for the perfect hunting dog can be a difficult task if you do not know where to start. You have probably seen hundreds of ads or advertisements for all different kinds of breeds, but none that catch your eye as being perfect for your lifestyle and the type of hunting you want to do. If this is the case then you are in luck because learning how to choose a good breed of deerhound is actually very easy.

The first thing you need to know is that there are three different categories when it comes to deerhounds. There are the standardbreds; the toy or miniature sighthounds; and the hunt spaniels. They range in size from five and a half inches to fourteen inches and sometimes even longer. The smallest dogs do not have the stamina to track and chase large animals; so they are usually not the right choice for beginning hunting dogs. However, if you only want to go on private property to hunt, then the standardbred may be the right choice for you. They are smaller, have less energy, and are usually much easier to train.

The next thing you should know is that there are two main types of hunting that these breeds specialize in; scent hounds, and tracking hounds. They are classified according to how they hunt; the scent hounds locate food or scent and the tracking breed follows the trail of the hunted animal. It may sound like these dogs would be great together; however they are very different and can actually do very opposite things. For instance, trackers are known to be more aggressive than scent hounds; and they often will stay after the game. These dogs also track smaller animals that are running around.

The last thing to understand about this dog breed is that they are incredibly loyal; sometimes they can become aggressive towards people and other animals in the area. This can make them great companions for the elderly or those who do not like to be around other people. Also, they are good hunters; however, because of their aggressive behavior they should only be trained to be hunted if they are taught how to be gentle with the prey. An older dog should only be trained to hunt if they are fully grown; a younger dog would not be able to catch anything that is bigger than they are.

One thing that this breed is known for is being very good at scent detection. This means that they can smell animals; however, they are not the best when it comes to tracking. This means that they need to be taught to track by scent rather than scent alone. Tracking an animal by scent requires a lot of patience and work. If you teach your dog how to track by scent; he/she would probably be one of the most faithful dogs you could ever get. This means that you could probably get as many hours of enjoyment out of having a Deerhound; dog breed as you want.

One last thing you should know about the Deerhound; dog breed is that they are very energetic. They like to run and play a lot. So, you should take them for walks on a daily basis. The walk will help them get exercise and stay fit. They usually do not like being tied up so be sure to make sure that they are loose when you take them on a walk.

Now that you know some of the history of the Deerhound; dog breed there are some things that you should know before getting one. The first thing that you should know is that these dogs are usually very healthy. There is not usually any health problems that come from owning a Deerhound; dog breed. They do have a tendency to suffer from flea infestations but that is a problem that you would have to check with your veterinarian. If you do notice that your dog has been bitten by something, I would contact your vet as soon as possible to find out what the problem is.

As you can see the history of the Deerhound; dog breed is not that bad. I would recommend this dog breed to people that are interested in getting a small dog to protect their home from small animals and rodents. Deerhounds tend to be very friendly towards humans and other animals. So, if you are looking for a friendly small dog that will protect your family from intruders then I would definitely recommend this breed of dog.
